Hey Everyone,
With January 2012 now here, this means a return of some of my favorite TV shows. There a few returning as well as new TV show premiering that are hitting TV this week and next. With that in mind, I though I’d share the shows i’m most looking forward to seeing!
My top 5 TV Shows I can’t wait to reconnect with this winter are:
5. Once Upon a Time (Jan. 8)
Once Upon a Time quickly became a favorite of mine when it premiere last fall. The interwoven storybook characters with the real life setting is creative and the characters are so well casted. For those who don’t know, the show follows main character Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) as she helps a young boy Henry (Jared Gilmore), the son she gave up, solve some of the mysteries of the small town in Maine where Henry lives. The mysteries revolve around the people of the town who mirror fairy tale characters. Viewers get flashbacks into the fariy tale world so characters begin to be matched with their real life counterparts. The main nemesis is Henry’s adoptive mother and also mayor of the town, Regina Mills (Lana Parrilla). Parrilla also plays the Evil Queen in the Fairytale flashbacks. The different fairy tale stories come alive both in the fair tale world and the real one throughout each episode. What I love the most about the show is the mystery and the retelling of the fairy tales (I am a girl at heart you know). Plus I absolutely adore the character Henry. He’s such a great kid and his intelligence, drive, and bravery is astounding in a little boy!
Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8pm on ABC
4. Gossip Girl (Jan 16th)
Gossip Girl is currently on it’s 5th season and I’m way behind! I’ve only read about half of the books based on the series, but I new after the first season that I loved the series much more. I’m currently only on the third season (I know, I know, I must catch up!), but I’m excited for the return merely for the fact that there is a return! I hate having favorite shows get cancelled, but I do understand when a show needs to end. However, this show I think can last for a while longer. On top of the plot line, i’m also excited to see the growing and changing styles of the characters (cue girl-mode now). Fashion has become a stronger interest in my life and i’ve always loved the different fashions of each of the characters. Each character has a distinct sense of style that matches their personality and it’s always interesting to see what the characters wear next. Just little changes in each of the characters’ fashion and style shows a change in the characters themselves and it’s fascinating to watch!
Gossip Girl airs Mondays at 8pm on The CW
3. Criminal Minds (Jan 18th)
Criminal Minds is one of my favorite shows! I’ve seen almost every episode (i’ve missed some of season 6) and can’t wait to continue watching the series. The show has a dynamic group of characters and after a rocky year of letting go and bringing back characters, I’m happy the show is finally settling down again. All the characters on the Behavioral Analyst team really seem to mesh well. Besides the great character chemistry and believablity, I also love the main subject of the show. Criminal Psychology has always interested me and although I know the show is more exaggerated then real life (TV always does that), I still find the psychological motivation shown and detective tactics used to be fascinating. Plus the writers come up with some really creepy characters for the team to capture and those “fake” serial killers in themselves are pure genius on the writers part. Also the show is not inhibited by setting. Since the team works for the FBI the setting can take place in any city or town in the U.S. and it is interesting to see where the team will go next. The show really is worth watching at least from time to time. I personally love it and try to watch it as faithfully as I can.
Criminal Minds airs Wednesdays at 9pm on CBS.
2. NCIS (Jan 3rd)
NCIS is another one of those shows that I’ve watched from the beginning. I started as a CSI lover and watch all of the break offs as well (although the original series was always my favorite). However, I eventually moved on from the CSI movement. NCIS however capture my attention and so far has kept it pretty well. NCIS I can assuredly say is one of my favorite shows. I love the character chemistry and think that each character was casted perfectly. You could say that the storyline sometimes gets monotonous, but you fall so much in love with the character dynamics that you don’t always notice. My favorite character is tied with Ducky and Abby. They are both quirky and each played well. I also like the military backdrop of the main theme of the show (this might have come from watching JAG with my dad). It adds a different feel to the forensics of the show as well as allows for more plot twists then a regular city backdrop. This show is definitely worth a try if you are into the forensic or detective scene/genre.
NCIS airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on CBS.
1. Vampire Diaries (Jan 5th)
Vampire Diaries is still a new show for me. It has just started its third season this past fall, however I watched seasons 1 and 2 over the summer. One of my professors actually recommended the show (along with True Blood–which I’ve only seen the first season (I’m a little behind0). I do remember watching the first episode when it aired for the first time on the CW with my friend Jenna in my dorm room and being unimpressed which led me to drop the show. My professor, however recommended watching a couple more episodes saying that the show picked up after the first 3 or so. So I took the summer to give the show a try and I was instantly addicted. I fell for all the characters and plot twists. What I loved most about the show was that is was almost perfectly true to the original vampire legend (can walk out during the day, needed to be invited in, etc.). It wasn’t like the Twilight phenomena in that regard. Vampires, the main three included, were actual vampires that fed on humans. I was also intrigued with the storyline. As the show progressed it was exciting to see the new villains emerge and other characters evolve in their supernatural abilities. Plus, what girl doesn’t love a love-triangle drama (or is it a square?)! All in all, this show has quickly become my favorite to watch, especially with my suite-mates up at school!
Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8pm on the CW.

Hopefully I incited some of you to try out some of these shows! Which TV premiers and returns are you looking forward to this winter? Happy viewing!
