PopCrunchCapture (2): Thief of Lies Book Signing

Good Afternoon my lovelies!

So what is PopCrunchCapture? Basically, PopCrunchCapture blog posts are posts of my experiences at book events/signings, book conventions (like BEA), and random travels to new cities, countries and bookstores 🙂

~ ~ ~

Last night I had the opportunity to attend a book signing for Thief of Lies (Library Jumpers #1) by Brenda Drake. The event took place at Porter Square Books in Cambridge, MA. This fun and adorable independent bookstore was such a delight to wander through. This was only my second time there and I had such fun exploring the different book sections. The bookstore is a little small, so I new I wanted to get to the event early to grab a decent seat! Luckily, I got to be second row! 🙂 My friend Rachel from school also came along as she was attending with her writing group. Brenda Drake (as I learned through the event and my friend Rachel) hosts online contents called Pitch Wars and Pitch Madness as well as helps aspiring writers find mentors and cultivate their writing. You can find more out about this on her website.

Back to the bookstore: Porter Square Books also plays hosts to Cafe Zing–a fair-trade coffee offering cafe with baked goods from local bakeries! I ordered my standard hot chocolate with whip cream because it’s winter and why the heck not?! I’m admittedly more of a tea drinker than a coffee drinker so if I’m out my go-to is either tea or hot chocolate. Although, I’ve been known to order a Gingerbread Latte or a cappuccino (if the place makes a good one lol).

With hot beverage in hand, I took my seat in the center of the second row and settled in for another bookish event! Brenda Drake began with a little introduction to the book, answered a few questions and went straight into a reading from Thief of Lies. Afterwards, the floor was open once again for Q&A. A lot of the attendees knew her from her work online and the community she helped establish, so the questions centered around writing, her creation of Pitch Wars and her inspirations behind Thief of Lies. I did try and throw in some book related questions by asking about her characters :). Her lovely aunt and uncle attended as well since they’re from Massachusetts and were a sweet and funny couple who interjected at some points. Her aunt also made yummy oatmeal chocolate-chip cookies and sugar-cookies that were very scrumptious!

I really loved the laid back atmosphere of Porter Square Books and the event overall. Brenda was really such a sweet person who answered everyone’s questions nicely. She definitely had me smiling and laughing throughout the event. Once the questions ended, I jumped in line to get Thief of Lies signed. She was really nice to talk with one-on-one and was even nice enough to grab a photo with me! I also received a cute bookmark with charms that was signed and a signed book cover magnet.

I’m very much excited to dig into this novel! It centers around a girl from Boston who is dragged into this new world of magic as she hops between beautiful world libraries through books and also explores some new worlds hidden inside these libraries. Of course there’s also a hot guy to satisfy my love of romance and enemies to contend with to satisfy my love of adventure! If you want to learn more about the book, check out the GoodReads synopsis 🙂

In the end, it was a lovely Friday night spent surrounded by book lovers, writers and lots of smiles.

Have you read Thief of Lies yet? Have you been to any book events recently? I’d love to know about your thoughts and experience! 🙂

As always, thanks so much for stopping by!

Happy Reading!
